MATT’S MATCHUPS – 2022-23 HOOPS – VOLUME 13

I posted a 16-4 (80 percent) mark last week, so my overall record is now 222-51, which leaves me at 81 percent for the season.

TUESDAY

Adams (7-11) at Mishawaka (14-5): The Eagles soared to a 57-52 win over Mishawaka last season. Tommie Hunt had three points in Adams’ 62-46 loss to Andrean. Jackson Snyder mustered five points in the Cavemen’s 64-28 loss to No. 1 (Class 3A) NorthWood. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 59, Adams 49.

Concord (9-9) at Clay (10-8): The Minutemen came away with a 69-53 win against Clay a season ago. Concord was limited to five points in the third quarter in its 47-30 loss to Northridge. Ayden Kent contributed 10 points in the Colonials’ 68-48 win over Elkhart. Matt’s pick: Clay 65, Concord 62.

Goshen (9-9) at LaPorte (14-6): The Slicers needed overtime last year to post a 59-56 win over Goshen. Nathan Pinarski netted four points in the RedHawks’ 60-45 win over Wawasee. Kyle Kirkham contributed 16 points in LaPorte’s 84-75 win at Merrillville. Matt’s pick: LaPorte 61, Goshen 57.

Jimtown (4-16) at Bethany Christian (12-8): The Bruins earned a 53-49 win over Jimtown a year ago. Javen Jackson had two points in the Jimmies’ 72-34 loss to Glenn. Tyson Chupp’s 17 points were not enough in Bethany Christian’s 66-59 loss to Lakewood Park Christian. Matt’s pick: Jimtown 36, Bethany Christian 34.

Knox (10-8) at Glenn (11-8): The Falcons flew past Knox, 60-47, in their previous meeting. Owen Binkley recorded 13 points in the Redskins’ 72-40 win over Oregon-Davis. Carson Krueger recorded six points and nine rebounds for Glenn in a 72-34 win against Jimtown. Matt’s pick: Glenn 62, Knox 50.

New Prairie (8-11) at Michigan City (14-6): The Wolves roared to a 79-43 win over New Prairie during the 2021-22 campaign. Gavin Gonzalez drained 15 points in the Cougars’ 60-49 win over Adams. Jamie Hodges racked up 34 points in Michigan City’s 97-34 win over Calumet. Matt’s pick: Michigan City 75, New Prairie 58.

Northridge (10-9) at Lakeland (13-6): The Raiders cruised to a 73-18 win over Lakeland a season ago. Alex Ellenson came up with 15 points for Northridge against Concord. Christian Troyer accounted for 18 points in the Lakers’ 59-56 win over Central Noble. Matt’s pick: Northridge 50, Lakeland 48.

Penn (19-1) at Plymouth (8-11): The Pilgrims suffered a 67-48 loss to No. 2 (Class 4A) Penn a year ago. Dylan Derda ended with six points in Penn’s 85-51 win over No. 8 (Class 3A) Washington. Davis Wray totaled 15 points in Plymouth’s 38-37 loss to Warsaw. Matt’s pick: Penn 77, Plymouth 60.

Riley (10-9) at Culver Academy (13-5): The Wildcats dropped a 45-21 decision to Culver Academy last season. Marvin Schindler racked up nine points in Riley’s 68-28 win over Bremen. Darius Holland scored five points in the Eagles’ 60-50 win over Merrillville. Matt’s pick: Culver Academy 47, Riley 40.

Saint Joseph (9-11, 6-3 NIC) at Bremen (1-17, 0-9 NIC): The Lions went to overtime to claim a 64-62 win against Saint Joseph last year. Gabe Nanni chipped in two points in the Indians’ 76-48 loss to No. 2 (Class 3A) Marian. Camden Hickman added four points for Bremen against Riley. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 64, Bremen 45.

Tippecanoe Valley (16-3) at NorthWood (17-2): The top-ranked (Class 3A) Panthers escaped with a 38-33 win over No. 10 (Class 3A) Tippecanoe Valley in the 2022 Wawasee Sectional opener. Nolan Cumberland finished with 19 points in the Vikings’ 86-39 win over North Miami. Camden Ransberger tallied five points for NorthWood against Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 63, Tippecanoe Valley 54.

Westview (13-5) at Wawasee (7-13): The Warriors are looking to make amends for a 57-53 loss to Wawasee in their last matchup. Brady Yoder poured in 26 points in the Warriors’ 67-51 win over Prairie Heights. Myles Everingham finished with nine points for the Warriors against Goshen. Matt’s pick: Westview 56. Wawasee 50.

FRIDAY

Clay (10-9, 4-6 NIC) at New Prairie (8-12. 3-7 NIC): The Colonials went to overtime to claim a 63-61 win over New Prairie last year. Tyrese Jones ended with 11 points in Clay’s 63-55 loss to Concord. Jayden Clemons tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Cougars’ 79-68 loss to Michigan City. Matt’s pick: Clay 60, New Prairie 57.

Elkhart Christian (7-12) at NorthWood (18-2): The Eagles dropped a 65-36 decision to No. 1 (Class 3A) NorthWood a year ago. Aiden Hibbard recorded 12 points and 14 steals in Elkhart Christian’s 40-31 win over Smith Academy. Ian Raasch became the 11th player to surpass the 1,000-point plateau with 12 points in the Panthers’ 48-39 win over No. 10 (Class 3A) Tippecanoe Valley. Matt’s pick: NorthWood 75, Elkhart Christian 54.

Glenn (12-8, 5-5 NIC) at Bremen (1-18, 0-10 NIC): The Falcons soared to a 66-53 win against Bremen in their previous meeting. Ty Larkins chipped in six points in Glenn’s 68-31 win over Knox. Baylor Orcutt registered 14 points in the Lions’ 82-36 loss to Saint Joseph. Matt’s pick: Glenn 55, Bremen 39,

Goshen (9-10) at Westview (13-6): The RedHawks earned a 54-45 win over Westview during the 2021-22 campaign. Lleyton Weddell had four points in Goshen’s 66-64 loss to LaPorte. Wiley Minix contributed 20 points in the Warriors’ 69-62 loss to Wawasee. Matt’s pick: Westview 47, Goshen 43.

Marian (19-2, 8-1 NIC) at Jimtown (5-16, 1-9 NIC): The No. 2 (Class 3A) Knights cruised to an 87-50 win over Jimtown a season ago. Jordan Maust finished with two points for Marian against Saint Joseph. Bishop Williams amassed 20 points in the Jimmies’ 65-53 win over Bethany Christian. Matt’s pick: Marian 79, Jimtown 53.

Mishawaka (15-5) at Career Academy (9-11): The Cavemen rolled to an 83-43 win over Career Academy last season. Cooper Pritchett’s 13 points lifted Mishawaka to a 66-57 win over Adams. Eli Winston mustered 12 points in the Trailblazers’ 92-23 win over Clinton Christian. Matt’s pick: Mishawaka 68, Career Academy 58.

Northridge (11-9) at Columbia City (12-9): The Raiders suffered a 57-52 loss to Columbia City a year ago. Nolan Bales chipped in 18 points in Northridge’s 56-52 win over Lakeland. Andrew Hedrick netted 28 points in the Eagles’ 46-42 win over Leo. Matt’s pick: Columbia City 52, Northridge 49.

Penn (20-1, 10-0 NIC) at Elkhart (6-13, 6-3 NIC): The Lions are looking to make amends for a 79-60 setback to No. 2 (Class 4A) Penn last year. Marcus Burton went over the 2,000-point mark for his career with 34 points in the Kingsmen’s 86-65 win at Plymouth. Alonzo Newbern came up with five points for Elkhart against Clay. Matt’s pick: Penn 81, Elkhart 63.

Riley (11-9, 6-3 NIC) at Adams (7-12, 3-7 NIC): The Eagles posted a pair of wins over Riley last season by counts of 75-55 and 57=47. Marvin Schindler accounted for 19 points in the Wildcats’ 47-44 win at Culver Academy. Gerron Barr finished with four points for Adams against Mishawaka. Matt’s pick: Riley 72, Adams 64.

Washington (14-4, 6-3 NIC) at Saint Joseph (10-11, 7-3 NIC): The Indians outlasted No, 8 (Class 3A) Washington, 69-63, in their last matchup. Jayce Lee racked up 20 points for Saint Joseph against Bremen. Steven Reynolds accumulated 11 points for the Panthers against Penn. Matt’s pick: Washington 67, Saint Joseph 60.
