MATT’S MATCHUPS – 2023-24 BASKETBALL – STATE FINALS

Some improvement took place as I went 20-4 (83 percent) on semistate Saturday. Heading into the state finals, my overall record is now 318-103, which has me at 76 percent for the season.

CLASS 4A

Indianapolis Ben Davis (23-5) vs. Fishers (28-1): The top-ranked Tigers opened the 2023-24 campaign with a 74-61 win over No. 8 and defending state champion Ben Davis on November 21. K.J. Windham netted 14 points, including the game-winning free throw, in the Giants’ 52-51 win over Jeffersonville in the New Castle semistate final. Cooper Zachary’s 11 points lifted Fishers to a 69-61 triumph over Fort Wayne Wayne in the Elkhart semistate finale. Matt’s pick: Fishers 71, Ben Davis 65.

CLASS 3A

Scottsburg (24-5) vs. Saint Joseph (20-9):Wyatt Zellers chipped in 12 points in the No. 4 Warriors’ 70-54 win over No. 6 and defending state runner-up Guerin Catholic in the Seymour semistate title game. Elijah King came up with six points in the Huskies’ 44-41 triple-overtime win against No. 7 Delta in the Logansport semistate final. Matt’s pick: Saint Joseph 59, Scottsburg 57.

CLASS 2A

Brownstown Central (27-4) vs. Wapahani (26-2): Parker Hehman contributed eight points in the top-ranked Braves’ 66-56 win against Parke Heritage in the Southport semistate finale. Camden Bell registered 13 points in the No. 2 Raiders’ 60-49 overtime win over No. 6 and defending state champion Fort Wayne Blackhawk in the Lafayette semistate title affair. Matt’s pick: Brownstown Central 64, Wapahani 60.

CLASS 1A

Bethesda Christian (23-7) vs. Fort Wayne Canterbury (18-9): Luke Douglas poured in 15 points for the No. 8 Patriots in their 63-38 win against No. 1 Barr-Reeve in the Washington semistate final. Tucker Day finished with 18 points in the Cavaliers’ 56-53 win against Liberty Christian. Matt’s pick: Bethesda Christian 54, Fort Wayne Canterbury 48.
