MATT’S MATCHUPS – 2023 FOOTBALL – STATE FINALS

Things didn’t go so well as I went 8-4 (67 percent) last week. Heading into the state finals, my overall record is now 201-44, which has me at 82 percent for the season.

FRIDAY

CLASS 1A: Indianapolis Lutheran (12-0) vs. Adams Central (14-0) (11 a.m.): The top ranked and two-defending state champion Saints downed No. 2 and two-time defending state runner-up Adams Central, 30-13, in last year’s title affair. Nate Hicks racked up 12 tackles in Indianapolis Lutheran’s 56-14 win over Sheridan. Trevor Currie hauled in a 48-yard touchdown pass in the Flying Jets’ 42-18 win over North Judson. Matt’s pick: Indianapolis Lutheran 31, Adams Central 26.

CLASS 3A: Heritage Hills (13-1) vs. Indianapolis Bishop Chatard (14-0) (3 p.m.): The No. 1 and defending state champion Trojans cruised to a 34-3 win over No. 7 Heritage Hills in the 2019 state championship game. Tyler Ruxer managed two receptions for 56 yards with a score in the Patriots’ 23-20 win over No. 6 Gibson Southern. Daniel Shaw accumulated seven carries for 106 yards with three touchdowns in Bishop Chatard’s 42-14 win over No. 9 Knox. Matt’s pick: Bishop Chatard 38, Heritage Hills 13.

CLASS 5A: Decatur Central (11-2) vs, Fort Wayne Snider (12-1) (7 p.m.): Halbert Aguirre came up with six rushes for 30 yards with a touchdown and registered 18 tackles in the No. 7 Hawks’ 24-12 win over No. 3 Bloomington South. Uriah Buchanan scampered 21 times for 96 yards with three scores and also recovered a fumble in the No. 2 Panthers’ 28-0 win over No. 6 Merrillville. Matt’s pick: Fort Wayne Snider 30, Decatur Central 25.

SATURDAY

CLASS 2A: North Posey (13-1) vs. Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (11-3) (11 a.m.): Colton Gardner accounted for 38 yards and a touchdown on eight carries in the No. 4 Vikings’ 37-7 win over Southmont. Dee Hogue registered five tackles and a pair of interceptions in the No. 7 Knights’ 28-7 win over No. 10 Lafayette Central Catholic. Matt’s pick: North Posey 27, Bishop Luers 23.

CLASS 4A: East Central (14-0) vs. NorthWood (12-2) (3 p.m.): Dylan Maxwell erupted for 251 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 14 attempts in the No. 1 and defending state champion Trojans’ 49-0 win over No. 3 New Palestine. Owen Roeder completed 13-of-20 for 153 yards with two touchdowns and ran 13 times for 183 yards and two scores in the Panthers’ 45-33 win over No. 10 Leo. Matt’s pick: East Central 47, NorthWood 22.

CLASS 6A: Indianapolis Ben Davis (12-1) vs. Crown Point (13-0) (7 p.m.): Nate Williams registered the game-winning 10-yard touchdown catch in the No. 3 Giants’ 37-34 overtime victory over No. 2 and three-time defending state champion Center Grove. Will Clark finished with 17 tackles and a quarterback sack in the No. 4 Bulldogs’ 38-31 double-overtime win over No. 5 Westfield. Matt’s pick: Ben Davis 43, Crown Point 36.
