Mid-States Football season opens with Taylor and Roosevelt earning victories

ROOSEVELT 55, MAYVILLE ST. (N.D.) 14

After a Mayville State touchdown on the game’s opening drive, Roosevelt went on to score 34 unanswered points as the Lakers start the new season with a win, 55-14 over the Comets.
Ke’Von Johnson and Tyler Tenner each rushed over the century mark in the win, as Johnson finished with a game-high 139 yards and four TDs. Tenner pitched in with a TD and 108 yards on 12 carries.
Quarterback Luke Wilson threw for 199 yards and a TD, completing 14 of 21 passes.
The Laker defense held Mayville State to just 154 yards of total offense, and only four yards rushing on the day. Zavier Barnes recorded a team-high five tackles for Roosevelt, while Jordan Payne and Charlie Brooks each had a sack, and Colin Day grabbed an interception in the win.

TAYLOR 27 LAWRENCE TECH 12

Three rushing touchdowns from three different rushers resulted in Taylor taking the first Mideast League game of the season, as the Trojans posted 24 points in the second half in a 27-12 victory at Lawrence Tech.
The Blue Devils struck first with a 17-yard TD pass from Tyler Kulka to C.J. Thompson early in the second quarter. A pair of Zane Shilts field goals would even the score after the halftime break, before three straight TD runs from Dakohta Sonnich, Dylan Scally, and Stephen Ellis gave the Trojans the lead for good.
Brendan Lamb led Taylor with 161 rushing yards on 17 carries, while Scally reached the century mark with 102 yards.
For Lawrence Tech, Kulka tallied 298 yards and two TDs, completing 25 of 44 passes. Jalen Wallace made nine catches for 116 yards, while Thompson made two TD receptions for the Blue Devils.
Aven Jones led the Taylor defense with nine tackles and a sack, along with a forced fumble. Mitch Waters made a game-high 11 tackles for Lawrence Tech, with three tackles for loss.

LYON (ARK.) 24, MISSOURI BAPTIST 12

Jonas Cox was a perfect 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, but Missouri Baptist were unable to find the end zone as the Spartans opened the season with a 24-12 road loss at Lyon (Ark.).
The Scots opened the game with a 75-yard TD drive, before Missouri Baptist answered with three unanswered scoring drives as Cox converted field goals of 24, 35, and 29 yards. Lyon would score a field goal to close the first half and take a 10-9 lead at the break.
A pair of second-half TD drives would give Lyon the lead for good, with another Spartan field goal in the fourth quarter to close out the game.
Blake Kight led Missouri Baptist with 11 tackles and a pair of tackles for loss.

HASTINGS 28, TRINITY INTERNATIONAL 0

Cameron Jones led Trinity International with 131 receiving yards on 13 catches, but the Trojan offense was unable to put points on the board in a 28-0 loss to Hastings (Neb.).
The visiting Broncos took an early 14-0 lead with a pair of first-quarter TDs. The Trojans generated over 300 yards of total offense, but three turnovers turned costly in finding the end zone.
Liam Mickle finished with 161 passing yards on 16-of-37 passing. Defensively the Trojans were led by Lorenzano Blakeney, with nine tackles. Jeremy Walton registered one sack and three tackles for loss.

AVE MARIA (FLA.) 53, MADONNA 0

Three first-quarter touchdowns were too much to overcome, as Madonna kicked off the 2022 season with a 53-0 loss to Ave Maria (Fla.).
Quarterback Arthur Brantley IV finished with 102 yards, going 11-for-17 through the air along with a team-high 39 rushing yards in his first start as a Crusader. Allen Fordham made three catches for 40 yards.
Defensively, Dalen Cobb made 10 tackles to lead Madonna.
