IN MEMORIAM:
REMEMBERING THOSE WHO IMPACTED THE GAME
• Julius Crosslin, who played at Oklahoma State and then for the Cowboys in the NFL, passed away July 16. He was 39.
• C.R. Roberts, who played at Southern California and was known for his legendary 1956 performance against Texas that broke through racist barriers, passed away July 11 of natural causes. He was 87.
• Joe Campbell, an All-America defensive lineman at Maryland who then played in the NFL, passed away July 9 of a heart attack after hiking in Florida. He was 68.
• Lee Hedges, who played at LSU before becoming a legendary high school coach in Louisiana, passed away July 9. He was 93.
• Gary Allen, who played at Hawaii and then in the NFL and CFL, passed away July 8 of heart failure. He was 63.
• Bryan Collins, who played at St. John’s (NY) and was the head coach at LIU (NY) for 23 seasons and most recently the defensive coordinator at Stony Brook, passed away July 8 after a heart attack. He was 58.
• Joe Tuminello, a standout on both sides of the ball at LSU in the 1950s and a member of the LSU Athletics Hall of Fame, passed away. He was 90.
• Johnie Cooks, a First Team All-American at Mississippi State in 1981 who went onto a 10-year career in the NFL, passed away July 6. He was 64.
• Gene Gaines, who played at UCLA before a career in the CFL, passed away July 6. He was 85.
• Fred Willis, an All-America running back at Boston College who then played in the NFL for seven years, passed away July 4. He was 75.
• Vince Tobin, who played at Missouri and then became a college and NFL coach, passed away July 3. He was 79.
