No. 1 Badgers fall at No. 11 Michigan State

McClellan makes 38 saves

 

The No. 1 Wisconsin men’s hockey team ended its six-game win streak on Friday Night after falling 4-2 at No. 11 Michigan State at Munn Arena.

Graduate student forward Owen Lindmark and freshman forward Sawyer Scholl scored the two goals for the Badgers (9-2-0, 4-1-0 Big Ten). Senior goaltender Kyle McClellan showed a strong effort in net, stopping 38 of MSU’s 42 shots on goal.

Michigan State (9-3-1, 4-0-1 Big Ten) opened the scoring with less than a minute remaining in the first period on a shot from Nicolas Muller.

After heading into the second period with a one-goal deficit, Wisconsin found the back of the net eight minutes into the middle frame. Sophomore forward Jack Horbach slid a perfect pass from Michigan State’s right circle to Owen Lindmark at the left circle, who fired a one-timer past MSU netminder Trey Augustine to put the Badgers on the board.

 

The Spartans regained the lead eight minutes later on a power-play goal from Joey Larson on a one-timer of his own.

Michigan State made it 3-1 with a minute remaining in the second period when Tanner Kelly beat the glove of goaltender Kyle McClellan.

The Badgers lit the lamp again on Sawyer Scholl’s second goal of the season with 12 minutes left in the third period. The freshman picked up the puck behind Michigan State’s net and skated around to the right side of the goal before sliding it past Augustine.

 

Wisconsin received a power play opportunity late in the third period but was unable to convert for the equalizer.

With two minutes left in the final frame, the Spartans sealed their victory with an empty-net goal.

Notes to know:
– Owen Lindmark scored his fifth goal of the year, surpassing his single-season goal total for each season he’s played at UW except his six-goal freshman season
– Michigan State’s 42 shots on goal is Wisconsin’s highest opponent shot total of the season so far
– Wisconsin’s six-game win streak was its longest since UW won six games from Dec. 6-28, 2013
