No. 6/5 Buckeyes Drop Game at Michigan, 4-2

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 6/5-ranked Ohio State men’s hockey team lost to Michigan, 4-2, Friday in game one of a Big Ten series in Yost Ice Arena. The teams will wrap up the weekend, and the regular season, series at 6 p.m. Saturday, with BTN and BTN2Go televising the game. Ohio State is now 19-8-4 overall and 12-6-3-2 in the Big Ten, in first place in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines are 13-12-6 and 9-8-4-2 in the league. Ohio State needs at least two points to clinch a share of the league regular season title.

In the first … Neither team scored in the first period, with the Buckeyes outshooting the Wolverines, 10-5. Ohio State had two of the three power play chances.
In the second … The Buckeyes opened the scoring at 4:56 of the first when Mason Jobst took a feed from Gordi Myer, skated through the Wolverine defense and scored on a backhand. Miguel Fidler had the second assist on the goal, Jobst’s team-best 17th goal and 35th point of the season. Michigan had a 5-on-3 power play chance start with 12 seconds left in the period and it took advantage, with Quinn Hughes scoring from the point with 2.4 seconds remaining in the stanza. Ohio State outshot Michigan, 12-10, in the period and each team had two power play chances.
In the third … Ohio State pushed ahead when Tanner Laczynski scored on the rebound of a Freddy Gerard shot at 5:44. The play started with Gerard and Ronnie Hein forcing a turnover in the Michigan zone. The tally was Laczynski’s ninth goal – and 26th point – of the year. Nolan Moyle tallied back to back for the Wolverines at 9:30 to tie the game and at 16:49 to put Michigan ahead for the first time. On the go-ahead goal a penalty was called on a Buckeye and Michigan scored one second after the power play expired for a 4-2 advantage at 18:50. The Buckeyes pulled their goalie for the extra attacker for the final 1:10 but did not score. Shots were 10-9 in favor of Michigan in the period.
Shots … Ohio State outshot Michigan, 31-25, in the game. Sean Romeo played 58:50 for the Buckeyes and had 21 saves. Strauss Mann had 29 stops for the Wolverines in 59:42. Gordi Myer and Tommy Parran led the Buckeyes with two shot blocks each.
Special Teams … Ohio State was unable to convert on four power play chances and Michigan was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
