ONU Upsets Viterbo, SXU Cruises Past IUSB On Baseball Tourney First Day

JOLIET, Ill. — The first upset of the 2025 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament did not take long as No. 5 seed Olivet Nazarene University used three early runs and another four late to get past No. 4 seed Viterbo University 8-3 in the opening game on Wednesday afternoon.

In the only other contest played, Saint Xavier scored early and often to defeat No. 6 seed Indiana University South Bend by a 9-1 count.

That sets the table for the first two games of the day on Friday with Olivet Nazarene (24-24) set to take on top seed Judson University (28-21) at 10 am and Saint Xavier (28-22) meeting No. 2 seed St. Ambrose University (25-23) at 1 pm.

The other two contests have times set, but only one opponent.  Indiana South Bend (22-29) awaits the loser of the ONU-Judson contest at 4 pm, with Viterbo (24-24) scheduled to face the loser of the SXU-SAU matchup at 7 pm.

Recapping Wednesday:

Olivet Nazarene 8, Viterbo 3
Olivet Nazarene built a three-run lead after three innings only to have Viterbo wipe that out with a three-run fifth inning.  That tie lasted just one-half inning after ONU scored the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and then added four insurance runs in the ninth inning.  Aden Aukland led a group of six Tigers with multi-hit games as part of an overall 15-hit attack.  He went 3-for-5 with one run batted in.  Spencer Hans drove in two of Viterbo’s three runs and collected a pair of hits.  Cade Carrington (3-0) used 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to gain the victory.

Saint Xavier 9, Indiana South Bend 1
Saint Xavier scored in each of the first four innings and five of the first six to cruise to the win.  Eight different Cougars supplied hits to the effort, topped by Justin Massingale’s 3-for-4, 4-RBI game.  Among his hits was a solo home run in the third inning.  Sean Moore also drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.  Jimmy Fairley (9-1) was dominant on the mound, striking out seven over five innings, while scattering four hits and one walk.
