SOME ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR IRISH SKATERS IN 6-3 LOSS AT PENN STATE
By John Fineran For 15 seconds Saturday night in its 6-3 Big Ten hockey loss at No. 8 Penn State, there was a very encouraging light at the end of the very long season tunnel for beleaguered Notre Dame and its first-year head coach Brock Sheahan. Though the setback was the ninth straight and 15th in the last 16 games for the last-place Irish (4-17-1, 0-12-0 Big Ten for one point), for the second straight night Notre Dame looked like it belonged on the same ice with coach Guy Gadowsky’s Nittany Lions (16-6-0, 8-4-0 Big Ten for 25 points). The Fighting Irish showed some fight and not the kind...
PENALTIES, HOT PENN STATE GOALIE KEEP IRISH WINLESS IN BIG TEN IN 4-1 LOSS
By John Fineran Notre Dame’s hockey team wasn’t its own worst enemy Friday night, but the Irish were close. They just couldn’t stay out of the penalty box once again and then couldn’t solve No. 8 Penn State’s goaltender Josh Fleming. Fleming, a 6-foot-2 freshman from Montreal, turned aside 41 of 42 shots, including all 20 the Irish launched in the third period after Notre Dame surrendered three power-play goals while taking another eight penalties totaling 27 minutes. It all added up to a 4-1 Big Ten Conference setback for visiting Notre Dame in front of an overflow crowd of 6,455 watching...
