Pilots Baseball Sweep Goshen

KOKOMO, Ind. — The Bethel Pilots (12-8, 5-3) complete the series sweep over the Goshen College Maple Leafs (6-14, 2-6) at Championship Park in Kokomo, Ind., after inclement weather on Friday moved the game, by a score of 20-3 and 8-6.

GAME 1

The Pilots got off to an early start with a three-run bottom of the first on an RBI single by Alex Stout, and Cooper Tolson followed with a two-RBI single.

Jeremy Wiersema added to the Pilot lead with a big two-RBI triple in the bottom of the second to up the lead to 5-0. The Pilot rally was not over as Wiersema stole home after the Maple Leafs threw on Eli MacDonald, who stole second base. Alex Stout ripped a two-run homer that shot the lead up to 8-0. Dominic Deisler capped off the rally with a home run to end the second 9-0 over Goshen.

Wiersema plated two more runs in the bottom of the third on a double for his fourth RBI of the game, and Stout hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score MacDonald, 10-0.

Goshen put up three runs in the top of the fourth on two RBI singles and an RBI double to get on the board 11-3.

Bethel answered back with four more runs in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double by Thomas Dolan and Andrew Miranda, then Wiersema slammed a homer for two runs.

The fifth inning saw a run scored by Dolan hit by a pitch, Miranda plated two runs on a single, and Wiersema scored two on his second double of the game and fourth extra-base hit. The Pilots won 20-3.

Ty Mickiewicz threw six innings and allowed eight hits on three runs, two walks, and six strikeouts, earning him his second win.

GAME 2

Stout started the nightcap hot with an RBI double that scored Miranda in the bottom of the first to start the game 1-0, then Deisler singled, and Stout scored from second.

Goshen answered in the second on an RBI that was hit to the pitcher, but the Pilots put themselves on the board with an RBI ground out to the pitcher.

Bethel rallied in the bottom of the second with RBI doubles by Dolan, and Miranda continued to add to the lead with a sac fly by MacDonald to grow to 5-1.

Stout doubled for his second time of the nightcap in the fifth innings to score MacDonald, which gave the Pilots a commanding lead of 6-1.

Goshen threatened to come back with a home run and an RBI single in the sixth to get within two runs, 6-4. Bethel put up two more in the bottom of the sixth on a MacDonald two-RBI single, which proved to be two crucial insurance runs after Goshen came close to taking their first lead of the day but fell short 8-6.

Andrew Gerber improved to 2-0 on the season after he threw 5.1 innings, allowed six hits on four runs, two walks, and struck out five. Noah Borwege got his second save of the season by closing out the seventh inning on two strikeouts.

The Pilots play their third Crossroads League series on the road in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Friday, Mar. 17, and Saturday, Mar. 18, against Saint Francis (Ind.).
