Second Half Fuels Trojan Win on the Road

UNIVERSITY PARK, Ill. – On Wednesday evening the Taylor University women’s basketball team traveled to Illinois for a non-league matchup, in which the Trojans defeated Governors State (4-7) by a score of 60-46.

After a slow start to the game, the Trojan offense came alive in the second half, outscoring the Jaguars 39-18 in the final 20 minutes of play. A 22-point third quarter was particularly significant for the Trojans, as they doubled their first-half point total in just 10 minutes of play.

Taylor gained the game’s advantage by means of outstanding rebounding and a proficient shot from the free throw line.

Led by Taylor Westgate’s 18 rebounds, the Trojans outpaced the Jaguars on the boards by a mark 49-29, 16 of which were on the offensive end leading to 20 second-chance points for the Trojans.

Meanwhile, Taylor made 16 of 18 shots from the free-throw line for an average of 88.9 percent, which is a season-best for the Trojans thus far in the 2021-2022 campaign.

Westgate not only led the way for Taylor on the boards, but the sophomore forward also scored a team-high 21 points on 8-17 shooting, giving the Marion, Indiana, native her seventh double-double on the season.

Seniors, Kayla Kirtley and Lauren James, added 14 and 11 points, respectively, while James dished out an additional seven assists.

Taylor’s 60-46 victory over Governors State improves its record to 5-0 all-time against the Jaguars, while also snapping a three-game losing streak and eliminating the potential of the team’s first four-game skid since the 2016-2017 season.

The Trojans (6-7) will continue in non-league play on Saturday, December 11th, when Taylor travels to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to play Aquinas (8-7) at 1:00 pm.
