Shumaker, Chaffin collect first Louisville Slugger/Wilson DI weekly honors of 2025

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Florida’s Taylor Shumaker and Mississippi State’s Raelin Chaffin collected the first weekly awards of 2025, earning Division I Louisville Slugger/NFCA Player and Wilson/NFCA Pitcher of the Week honors for contests played Feb. 6-9.

Shumaker made the most of her opening collegiate weekend, powering the second-ranked Gators to six wins with five home runs, nine RBI and a 1.444 slugging percentage. The freshman outfielder added two doubles, 11 runs scored and four walks to go along with a .591 on-base percentage. Shumaker matched a single-game program record with four runs scored against Michigan. She also homered twice and drove in four runs versus the Wolverines, while also launching two long balls in a win over USF.

Chaffin, making her Bulldog debut, earned all four wins in the circle on No. 19 Mississippi State’s opening weekend at the NFCA DI Leadoff Classic presented by MaxBP. Named to the all-tournament team, Chaffin became just the second Bulldog since at least 2003 to open her MSU career with four wins in her first four appearances. She was 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA, striking out 20, walking five and surrendering just one unearned run over 22.1 innings. Chaffin went the distance in wins over No. 11 Texas Tech, outdueling NiJaree Canady in eight innings (6 K, 3 H), and blanking No. 18 Nebraska on five hits and fanning five with no walks.

The awards are voted on by the NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll Committee, which features one member head coach from each of the NCAA’s 31 conferences.
