SIX DIFFERENT IRISH SKATERS SCORE GOALS TO BACK SAY IN 6-1 TRIUMPH AT WISCONSIN

By JOHN FINERAN

As difficult as this season has been for the Notre Dame hockey team, the Fighting Irish finally learned something about themselves Saturday night – that a lot of determination can take you a long way.

One night after being blown out of the Kohl Center by a seven-goal Wisconsin barrage, Notre Dame unleashed an offensive explosion of its own, with six different players scoring goals to back solid goaltending from junior Owen Say in a 6-1 wipeout of the Badgers before 12,959 fans who couldn’t believe what they were seeing on Senior Night.

Say, who was replaced by freshman Nicholas Kempf in Friday’s four-goal first period by the Badgers that led to their eventual 7-3 victory, stopped all but one of the 32 shots Wisconsin directed his way Saturday night as Notre Dame broke a five-game losing streak to improve to 10-21-1 overall and 4-17-1 in the Big Ten for 14 points.

The triumph also was the 599th for Irish coach Jeff Jackson, who announced last summer that this would be his last behind the bench with the reins being handed over to associate head coach Brock Sheahan. Jackson, who won a pair of NCAA national titles at Lake Superior State and has four Frozen Four appearances, eight conference titles and 417 victories in his 20-year stay in South Bend, will seek win No. 600 this weekend when the Irish play host to top-ranked Michigan State, his alma mater, to conclude the regular season.

The six goals – two in each of the three periods – were the second highest total in a single game this season for the Irish, who beat Michigan 7-4 at home on Jan. 11, and the first one came from an unexpected source. Fourth-line junior left wing Niko Jovanovic, playing in only the 17th game in a collegiate career hampered by injuries, blasted a 25-footer past Wisconsin goalie Tommy Scarfone at 4:50 to get the good times rolling.

Then Irish senior captain Justin Janicke scored a power-play goal with just 5.6 seconds remaining in the first period for a 2-0 Irish lead. In the second period, sophomores Cole Knuble (7:44) and Danny Nelson (16:44) sandwiched Wisconsin’s lone goal by Anthony Kehrer (16:35) to make it 4-1.

Finally in the third period, graduate center Ian Murphy (7:36) chased Scarfone from the game when he roofed a shot over the goalie. Graduate left wing Grant Silianoff scored the final goal into an empty net from his own blueline at 15:16 as the Irish killed off a five-minute major to Henry Nelson by allowing just one shot at Say.

Both Janicke and Knuble added assists to go along with their goals to head the two-point club which included junior defensemen Axel Kumlin and Michael Mastrodomenico, sophomore blueliner Henry Nelson and graduate right wing Blake Biondi who all had two assists for the night.

If Jackson was displeased with anything, it was the parade to the penalty box his teams made when the Badgers lost their composure and got the Irish to do the same. Both teams were penalized nine times, with Henry Nelson receiving his five-minute major and game banishment for spearing.

Coach Mike Hastings’ Badgers, who ended a six-game losing streak with their victory Friday night, concluded their regular season at 12-19-3 overall and 7-16-1 Big Ten for 27 points and sixth place in the league, one spot ahead of Notre Dame. Wisconsin will play an exhibition next Sunday against the U.S. Under-18 team to stay competitive for the Big Ten Tournament which begins with best-of-three quarterfinal series March 7-9.

Both Notre Dame and Wisconsin were whistled for nine penalties each – the Irish totaled 37 minutes to the Badgers’ 26. Six of the penalties came in the third period and included Henry Nelson’s five-minute major for spearing and a game misconduct at 10:29. Later, cross-checking penalties and 10-minute persisting in misconduct penalties were given to Silianoff and Wisconsin’s Sawyer Scholl at 18:49.

The Irish took a 1-0 lead at 4:50 of the opening period when the 6-foot-3 Jovanovic chased after a puck off the boards from Kumlin and beat Scarfone.

The Irish had three power-play opportunities to Wisconsin’s one in the opening period, and five seconds before the period ended, they made the Badgers pay for Scholl’s roughing penalty. Knuble found Biondi with a cross-ice pass and Biondi then backhanded the puck to Janicke who quickly wristed it past Scarfone for a 2-0 lead.

Despite being outshot 15-8 in the second period, the Irish increased their lead to 4-1 after two periods. The teams were skating four-on-four when Kumlin sent Knuble out of the Irish zone to start a scoring play. Knuble hit Henry Nelson with a cross-ice pass, skated behind the Wisconsin defense and got a return pass from Nelson before beating Scarfone with a backhander at 7:44 for a 3-1 lead.

It remained that way until the 16th minute when the Badgers finally got on the board when Anthony Kehrer gathered in a rebound Say could not control and beat the Irish goalie at 16:35.

But just nine seconds later, the Irish were raising their sticks in celebration again after Danny Nelson won the faceoff draw. Scarfone would stop consecutive shots by Mastrodomenico and Ali before scooping out the puck to a waiting Danny Nelson who buried the puck from 15 feet out at 16:44 for the 4-1 lead the Irish took to the locker room after the second period.

The Irish made it 5-1 at 7:36 in the third period when Janicke sent the puck along the boards down low to Biondi, who skated around the net and found Murphy with a backhand pass all alone in front of Scarfone. Murphy deked the goalie down and then roofed the puck over him, ending Scarfone’s night.

When Henry Nelson went to the locker room after his major penalty at 10:29, the Irish penalty-kill units allowed just one shot which Say turned away, and that came after Wisconsin pulled relief goalie William Gramme at 12:40. Kumlin and sophomore defenseman Paul Fischer blocked three shots between until 14:57.

Then Silianoff got the puck from Mastrodomenico at the Irish blueline and sent the puck into the vacated net at 15:16 to conclude the scoring.

Next weekend, the Irish will send off their graduate and seniors and welcome their alumni to Jackson’s final two games behind the bench that come against his alma mater. Michigan State fell out of first place in the Big Ten – and likely will fall from No. 1 in the polls – after losing 3-2 Saturday to visiting Penn State a night following the Nittany Lions’ shootout win.

Assured of finishing in seventh place, Notre Dame will travel to the second-place finisher in the league – Minnesota, Michigan State or Ohio State – in a best-of-three quarterfinal series March 7-9.
