Taylor Caps Homecoming Weekend with Rout of SMW
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor’s Homecoming Weekend came to a close with an emphatic, 52-14, win over Saint Mary of the Woods in front of an overflow crowd inside Turner Stadium.
The Trojans piled up 492 total yards of offense with 259 through the air and 233 on the ground. The TU defense limited SMW (0-5) to 222 total yards and collected four takeaways, as it lowered its scoring average against to 16.0 points per game over its last four outings.
Samuel Ringer led the charge with his finest game with the Purple and Gray. The linebacker posted 10 tackles, one sack, three tackles for a loss and one forced fumble, while Maverick Brown also added 10 hits.
David Worlds, Owen Folta and Preston Bannister each hauled in one interception, with Worlds also forcing a fumble and breaking up two passes. Folta returned his interception for an 85-yard, game-changing, touchdown and finished with five tackles.
Brady Trebley excelled off the bench for Taylor, sparking the offense with 11 completions in 16 pass attempts for 246 yards and a trio of touchdowns. Nathan Munson ended with 106 receiving yards and one score, with JJ Payne posting 98 yards and one score and Kyle Stratton also catching one touchdown pass.
The TU ground game was led by 99 yards and one score from Jedidiah Galvin and a pair of scores from Evan Barker.
A sloppy first half that saw a trio of combined turnovers was salvaged by Folta’s pick-six with zeroes showing on the clock. With one second left in the half, Folta intercepted SMW’s final pass attempt on Taylor’s 15-yard line and took it to the house to push the Trojans to a 24-14 lead at the break.
It was all Taylor over the final 30 minutes of the contest, as TU cleaned things up and outscored the Pomeroys by a 21-0 margin in the third quarter and held the guests to 72 yards of offense in the second half.
Trebley connected with Munson for a 91-yard strike for the third touchdown of the period, with Munson evading two SMW defenders and galloping down the visiting sideline to push the lead to 45-14.
The Trojans added a fourth-quarter score to close the game on a 35-0 burst following the Folta pick and cruised to the 38-point win for head coach Aaron Mingo’s 30th head coaching victory with the Purple and Gray.
RV Taylor (3-2) will open MSFA Mideast League play on October 17, when it hosts Lawrence Tech (3-3) in a 1:00 pm start inside Turner Stadium.
