Titans baseball fall in doubleheader to Saint Ambrose to conclude season series

DAVENPORT, Iowa.- The Indiana University South Bend Titans (11-19, 3-9 CCAC) lost both games in their doubleheader versus the Saint Ambrose University Fighting Bees (12-11, 6-4 CCAC) falling in game one 8-3 before dropping game two 17-16.

Game 1

The Fighting Bees took the lead early in game one of the doubleheader by scoring two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.

IU South Bend cut their deficit in half in the top of the second inning when shortstop Jack Ryan homered to right center field to bring the Titans within one run.

Saint Ambrose broke the game open in the bottom half of the fourth inning, scoring six runs on just one hit to grow their lead to 8-1.

The Titans attempted to mount a comeback in the top half of the seventh inning, scoring two runs on an RBI double from Anthony Pohl and a sacrifice fly from Kaleb Farnham but could not push anymore runs across, ultimately falling in game one 8-3.

Game 2

Saint Ambrose struck first again in game two with a first inning home run to take an early 1-0 lead.

Both teams traded runs in the second inning, with the IUSB run being scored via RBI single from Josiah Nelson.

The Fighting Bees extended their lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the third before IU South Bend second baseman Devin Smith shortened the deficit with a two run home run in the top of the fourth.

The back and forth scoring continued as Saint Ambrose extended their lead by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth before the Titans answered with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.

IU South Bend scored their runs in the fifth thanks to an RBI walk from Quinn Meier, an RBI single from Braedon Leathed, and a bases clearing three RBI double from Josiah Nelson.

Saint Ambrose scratched one run across in the bottom of the sixth before the Titans put up another crooked number in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on three hits to extend their lead to 12-7.

The IU South Bend scoring came from a Saint Ambrose error, a sacrifice fly from Gabe Cortez, and RBI doubles from Logan Smith and Anthony Pohl.

However the scoring continued for the Fighting Bees as they plated six runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to regain a 13-12 lead.

Still the Titans rallied to regain the lead in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs on RBI singles from Logan Smith and Anthony Pohl and a two RBI double from Quinn Meier.

Saint Ambrose responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the ninth to sweep the doubleheader, winning game two 17-16.

The Indiana University South Bend Titans return to action on Friday, April 5th, when they to Palos Heights, Ill., for a doubleheader against the Trinity Christian College Trolls starting at 2:00 PM ET.
