SOUTH BEND, Ind. – 2019-20 marked another successful year for IU South Bend student-athletes and their involvement in community service projects.
Here are some of this year’s highlights:
Softball was involved in several projects: “Trunk or Treat” at Newton Park, passing out candy, which each girl contributed, played games, and did face painting. They volunteered at the Food Bank, as well as volunteering at Beacon Children’s Hospital during Christmas holidays, and Valentine’s Day.
Baseball worked with Team IMPACT, a non-profit chartered organization to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
Men’s basketball worked with The Boys and Girls Club on several occasions, had a group of developmentally handicapped kids in to visit with the team for a day, and went to speak with elementary school students while at the NAIA National Tournament in South Dakota.
Volleyball volunteered at Dismas House of South Bend: The team came together and bought taco supplies and made dinner for all the residents, then joined them for dinner. On two separate occasions they volunteered at Dunes Volleyball Club by running the kids camps on Saturday mornings working with pre-school through six grade. Finally, they volunteered at St. Margaret’s House, a local women’s shelter in South Bend getting ready for their annual walk by baking cookies and washing dishes. They also organized and packed up winter coats for those in need.
IU South Bend continues to embrace the Champions of Character initiative and is looking forward to another great year in 2020-21!
