TITANS STUN NO. 22 MICHIGAN-DEARBORN IN OVERTIME REMAINING UNDEFEATED
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – For the first time under head coach Steve Bruce, Indiana University South Bend women’s basketball earned its sixth straight victory to begin the season with a 76-74 overtime thrilling victory over No. 22 Michigan-Dearborn on Saturday afternoon inside the Student Activities Center. The Titans are now 6-0 overall to begin the 2019-20 season.
Two players for the Titans scored in double-figures, including junior center Courtney Haynes‘ game-high and season-high 20 points and senior Kyleigh Kubik with 13 points. Haynes also recorded her first double-double of the year, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
Despite foul trouble, sophomore Rachael Robards added nine points and four rebounds for the Titans while three other players registered seven points each, including Emma Fisher, Kylie Fehrman and Taitlyn Trenshaw.
As a team, IUSB for the game shot 49.2 percent from the field, including a quarter-high 66.7 percent in the third quarter. The Titans had 27 turnovers to UM-Dearborn’s 18 with IUSB scoring 22 off turnovers. IUSB dominated in the paint scoring 42 points to the Wolverines 30. Off the bench the Crimson & Cream scored 42 points, improving its record to 6-0 when scoring over 20 points off the bench.
Three of Robards nine points came at a crucial part in the game, occurring at the 1:12 mark in the fourth. The sophomore nailed a three to put IUSB up 64-63 remaining in the game. The Wolverines responded with a layup in the remaining 49 seconds before Haynes grabbed a crucial rebound with 22 seconds left. On the shot, Haynes was fouled and converted one-of-two free throws, forcing overtime for the first time this season in the SAC.
Kubik led the charge in the overtime with four points that occurred at 2:15 and 1:26 on the clock, giving the Titans a three-point advantage. Robards came up big on the defensive end, registering a steal off the inbounds with just seconds remaining. Fisher would be fouled, converting on one to help the Titans upset No. 22 Michigan-Dearborn, 76-74.
IUSB begins Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 13 to make the short trip over to Holy Cross before welcoming another top-25 team in Olivet Nazarene to South Bend on Saturday, Nov. 16.
