UIndy Earns Eighth Straight GLVC All-Sports Trophy

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis has earned its eighth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy, the league office announced Monday. The Greyhounds totaled 193.5 points for the 2018-19 academic year.

UIndy earned its 11th All-Sports Trophy in program history by 47.5 points over Bellarmine University. The Greyhounds have now captured the GLVC All-Sports Trophy in the 1978-79, 1994-95, and 2002-03 seasons, as well as the past eight dating back to 2011-12.

The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league’s 22 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in the respective sport’s Conference tournament.

Led by Dr. Sue Willey, the school’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Indianapolis captured a league-record nine GLVC Championships this season to earn first-place points in women’s cross country, golf and tennis, as well as football, indoor and outdoor track and field, swimming and diving, tennis, and lacrosse on the men’s side. Additionally, the UIndy men posted a runner-up finish in golf and wrestling, while the women placed second in softball, swimming and diving, as well as indoor and outdoor track and field.

Bellarmine picked up its second straight runner-up finish after finishing third in each of the previous three years.  The Knights totaled 146 points this year, thanks to GLVC titles in baseball and men’s basketball, as well as runner-up finishes in men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s basketball.

After tying the University of Southern Indiana for third place last year, Drury University edged out Lewis University for sole possession of third this season.  The Panthers totaled 143.5 points from GLVC Championships in women’s basketball, swimming and diving and volleyball, while the Flyers – winners of a GLVC-record 13 All-Sports Trophies – were a close fourth at 142 points, highlighted by league titles in women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

Southern Indiana secured fifth place by the slimmest of margins over Maryville University and McKendree University.  Led by a GLVC title in men’s cross country, USI totaled 120.25 points to edge out Maryville and McKendree with 120 points each.  The Saints’ season was highlighted by GLVC crowns in men’s golf and soccer, while the Bearcats scored their second straight wrestling title.

The All-Sports Trophy was first instituted in the GLVC during the 1978-79 season and seven different institutions have claimed the award.
