Valpo Athletics Mourns the Passing of Dr. James Malayter

The Valpo Athletics family is saddened by the passing of Dr. James “Jim” Malayter ’66, who was a fixture at Valparaiso University athletic events while serving as the team physician from 1983-2007.

Malayter, a 2012 Valpo Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, passed away on April 7 at the age of 80.

Malayter, who served as the team physician for all of the department’s teams and routinely traveled with the basketball programs, played football at Valpo for four seasons and was a member of the 1964 Indiana Collegiate Conference championship team.

Malayter went on to become an orthopedic surgeon and was a founding partner and president of Lakeshore Bone & Joint Institute until his retirement in 2007. In the early 1980s, he was one of the lead fundraisers for the project that built the Athletics-Recreation Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that tribute gifts be made to the Valpo Victory Fund in Jim’s honor. To donate, please go to give.valpo.edu and select the Valpo Victory Fund from the “Other Designations” menu.
