Wisconsin bested by Ohio State in overtime
Mosley scores lone Badger goal
MADISON, Wis. – In its first conference game of the season, the Wisconsin men’s hockey team fell to the Ohio State Buckeyes, 2-1, in overtime on Friday night at the Kohl Center. Despite the overtime loss, the Badgers still gain a point in the Big Ten standings.
Wisconsin (1-1-0, 0-1-0 Big Ten) opened the scoring early in the first period on the power play, but the Buckeyes (2-0-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) found the back of the net with 12.9 seconds remaining in the period to tie the game at one. Neither team scored again until 17 seconds remained in overtime when OSU lit the lamp to earn the extra conference point.
How it Happened
The Badgers got on the board first 3:35 into the first period after Ryland Mosley capitalized on a five-minute major power play. Deep in Wisconsin’s defensive zone, freshman forward Gavin Morrissey gave the puck to graduate student Mosley who started a three-on-three rush down the ice. As he entered OSU territory, he passed to his left to find sophomore forward Quinn Finley. Finley made a pass from the middle of the zone to Mosley up by the net who tipped it by Buckeye goaltender Logan Terness for his second goal of the season.
Ohio State tied it up with 12.9 seconds left in the opening period on a shot from Max Montes.
The second period was quiet, with neither team finding the back of the net or having a power-play opportunity.
Wisconsin controlled play for much of the third period and held a 13-3 shot advantage in the frame, but failed to solve OSU’s defense and Terness.
The Buckeyes got their first and only power-play chance of the evening 9:12 into the third period, but the Badgers killed it off to send the contest to overtime with both teams tied at one.
With 17 seconds left in the extra time, OSU’s Max Montes scored his second goal of the evening to give the Buckeyes the win. The Badgers challenged the call for goaltender interference, but the referees determined it to be a good goal.
Wisconsin went 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 38-23 advantage in shots on goal.
Notes to know:
– The Badgers continue to dominate in the faceoff circle, winning 59.3 percent of face-offs tonight. Through three games this season, UW has won 64.2 percent of faceoffs (104 wins in 162 attempts)
– So far this season, Wisconsin has outshot its opponents 119-59, including a 33-11 advantage in shots made in the third period
