Taylor Pitchers Fan 22 in Friday Split

WESTFIELD, Ind. – TU pitching allowed just one earned run, while striking out 22 batters through a doubleheader with IU South Bend at Grand Park. Taylor took game one by a score of 8-4, but dropped the second contest 2-0.

Taylor (10-3) fell behind early in game one, with IU South Bend (1-3) nabbing a run in the first and third innings. TU responded in the fourth, scoring two off of three base hits and two sacrifices.

The attack continued in the fifth inning, as Wyatt Whitman smashed the first home run of the season for the Trojans, bringing in two runs for a 4-2 lead.

The Trojans piled it on in the eighth inning, scoring four runs off of six hits and a walk. Andrew Kennedy provided a big at bat in the inning, nabbing a double and two RBI. Also contributing a double in the eighth, TJ Bass put together a solid performance in game one, going three-for-four in his first career multi-hit game.

Clay Riggins (4-0) came in for a scoreless three innings of relief and picked up his fourth win of the season. The TU pitching staff combined for 12 strikeouts in the game, while not allowing a single earned run.

In game two, the top of the lineup found a way on base for the Trojans but they could not string the hits together. The first four batters combined to hit .363 with two walks but were still unable to push a baserunner past second base.

Luke Shively (1-1) and Mitch Ubelhor were solid from the bump, fanning five apiece through the seven-inning game two. Ubelhor was in total control for just over two innings, refusing to allow a hit throughout his outing.

Taylor is scheduled to return to Grand Park in Westfield, Indiana on Saturday to take on IUSB in a doubleheader at 10:00 am.
