Martin Tough; PNW Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Lake Superior State
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Purdue University Northwest volleyball team fell in three sets to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) opponent Lake Superior State University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon, 3-0.  The Lakers won the opening set, 25-23, before taking the next two sets by scores of 28-26 and 25-21.
Senior Gabrielle Martin (DeMotte, Ind./Kankakee Valley) recorded a team-high 10 kills with 11 digs, while Kayla Elsea (Palmyra, Ind./Crawford County) tallied nine kills and five block assists.
Auburn Dodd (Chicago Heights, Ill./Gwendolyn Brooks) and Carissa Jones (Whiting, Ind./Bishop Noll) each had six kills, while Brooke Ahrens (Covington, Ind./Covington) registered 33 assists to headline the leaders for the Black and Gold.
PNW took an early 12-9 advantage to jump start the opening set, but the Lakers eventually evened the score at 23-23, before winning the final pair of points and taking the first set.
After Lake Superior State took a 13-9 lead in the second set, PNW battled back and rattled off four consecutive points capped by a kill from Ahrens to even the score at 13-13.
Each team traded points for the remainder of the set, before the Lakers came away with the 28-26 win.
Lake Superior went on to win the final set, 25-21 and come away with the three-set victory.
Purdue Northwest returns to action on Monday, Oct. 9, when they host Wisconsin-Parkside at 5 p.m. (CT) at the Fitness and Recreation Center in Hammond, Ind.
