Ohio State Vaults to Second Place in Directors’ Cup Standings

Men’s and women’s gymnastics catapult Buckeyes up two spots

Columbus, Ohio— After successful appearances at NCAA Championships for both the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams, Ohio State jumped up to second place in the most recent edition of the Learfield Directors’ Cup Standings. Stanford still sits in first place with Big Ten programs filling spots two through five. The second place Buckeyes are followed by Penn State, Michigan, and Wisconsin.

Ohio State added 129 points to its score since the last standings were released thanks to its men’s and women’s gymnastics teams and their performances at NCAA Championships. The men’s program finished in second place overall with a season-best score of 423.700. The runner-up finish was the highest since the Buckeyes placed second in 2005. Sean Melton earned All-America honors in three events after placing fourth in the all-around (86.400), second on rings (14.900), and third on high bar (14.500). Teammate Alec Yoder was an All-American in two events while Jake Dastrup, David Szarvas, and Joey Bonanno achieved All-America status as well.

On the women’s side, Alex Mattern advanced to NCAA’s and wrapped up a fantastic junior season by placing 15th in the all-around with a score of 39.200. After a bye in the first rotation, Mattern began the meet with a 9.7875 on uneven bars before notching a 9.7625 on balance beam in the third rotation. Mattern then tallied a 9.850 on floor exercise before concluding her meet with a 9.800 on vault.

The Learfield Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.

The first set of Division I spring standings will be released Thursday, May 25, and will include the National Collegiate Championships of women’s water polo, men’s volleyball and women’s beach volleyball.
