Purdue Northwest Athletics Introduces Men’s Club Ice Hockey

HAMMOND, Ind. & WESTVILLE, Ind. – Purdue University Northwest will expand its club sport sponsorship with the addition of men’s club ice hockey starting in Fall 2019.

“I am thrilled to announce Ice Hockey as our next club sport,” Director of Athletics Rick Costello said. “We are looking forward to attracting excellent students to PNW that are interested in receiving an outstanding education, competing in top level ice hockey, and playing in a brand new rink in Northwest Indiana. This is a wonderful addition to our array of sport offerings and should create plenty of excitement for our students, faculty, staff, alumni and the local community.”

The Pride will compete in the American Collegiate Hockey Association in the men’s D2 division.

PNW Hockey will be playing their home games at the Ice Kube Sports Complex, a 94,500 square foot facility featuring two ice rinks, locker rooms, skating pro shop and a 19,000 square foot trampoline park. The rink is one mile from the PNW Hammond Campus and located at 7527 Kennedy Avenue in Hammond, IN and next to Dowling Park, the outdoor home for PNW Athletics.

“Northwest Indiana is ready for college hockey,” Purdue University Northwest Chancellor Thomas Keon said. “The Greater Chicago area is ripe for club hockey and PNW is ready to fulfill the void.  Club Athletics offers students an opportunity to participate in a sport at a competitive level.  Participation in a club sport attracts talented well-rounded students and creates strong ties to their university as well as adding to student retention and success.  Our thanks to our friends at the Ice Kube for adding ice time to ‘The Region.”

A head coach for the newly formed ice hockey team will be announced in the coming days.
