Purdue Northwest Baseball Drops Series Finale with Grand Valley State, 9-0

Hammond, Ind. – Managing just three hits in the game, the Purdue Northwest baseball team dropped its final Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) series game with Grand Valley State University (Mich.), 9-0, Sunday afternoon at Albert’s Diamond Jewelers Field at Dowling Park in Hammond, Ind.  The Pride trailed 2-0 after two innings of play, but six runs by the Lakers in the top of the seventh and another run in the eighth allowed GVSU to pull away for the victory to even out the conference series (2-2).

Juniors Larry Chrisler (Gary, Ind./Snead State CC/Bishop Noll) and Evan Finke (Columbus, Ind./Snead State CC/Columbus North) as well as freshman Kevin McCune (Munster, Ind./Andrean) all recorded a hit for PNW in Sunday’s finale.  Freshman Kyle Freel (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) took the loss (2-1) on the mound as Sunday’s starter for the Pride.  He pitched 6.1 innings and allowed six hits, seven runs (four earned) and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Grand Valley State got its first run in the top of the second inning on a RBI on a fielder’s choice and went up 2-0 later in the frame on a sacrifice fly.  In the top of the seventh, the Lakers got a three-run double down the left field line to extend the lead to 5-0 and then scored three more runs in the inning off a fielder’s choice and a pair of RBI singles.  Another RBI single in the top of the eighth completed the game’s scoring.

Purdue Northwest (9-6 overall/2-2 GLIAC) heads up to Midland, Mich., on Thursday, March 29, to kick off a four-game GLIAC series with Northwood University (Mich.).  The first game is scheduled for nine innings and begins on that Thursday at 3 p.m. CT at Gerace Stadium in Midland.
