Purdue Northwest Men Fall Behind Early in 107-65 Road Loss to GVSU

Allendale, Mich. – Despite 17 points by senior Tyree Coe (Fishers, Ind./Fishers), the Purdue Northwest men’s basketball team fell behind early and never recovered in a 107-65 loss to Grand Valley State University (Mich.) Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match-up at the GVSU Fieldhouse in Allendale, Mich.  The Lakers were on fire offensively throughout the game shooting 62 percent (40-for-65) from the field and connecting on 14 three-pointers at a 54-percent (14-for-26) clip.

Junior Chris Nunn (Anderson, Ind./Liberty Christian) also scored in double figures for the Pride with 13 points, while senior Caleb Brannon (Lebanon, Ind./Lebanon) added 11 points off the bench.  GVSU was dominant on the boards Saturday out-rebounding PNW, 47-20.  No Purdue Northwest player recorded more than three rebounds in the game.

The Lakers jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Pride fought back and a three-pointer by Coe at the 14:04 mark tied the game at 11-11.  However, GVSU answered with a 7-0 run over the next two minutes of play to go ahead, 18-11.  With 10:06 remaining in the half, Nunn converted a lay-up to put PNW within six, 22-16; but the Purdue Northwest offense went cold over the next seven minutes scoring just two points to fall behind, 45-18.

The Pride trailed 51-25 at the half and Grand Valley State continued to pull away in the early minutes of the second half going up, 70-37, with 12:13 left to play.  It was more of the same the rest of the game as the hosts kept increasing their advantage going up as many as 47 (93-46) with 5:32 remaining.

Purdue Northwest (1-19 overall/1-11 GLIAC) heads up to Marquette, Mich., for its next conference game on Thursday, February 1, against the Northern Michigan Wildcats.  The GLIAC road game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. CT start at the Berry Events Center in Marquette.
