SEU Wrestling Dominant in Final Duals

MOUNT VERNON, Ga.—The Fire wrestling team cruised to a pair of dual meet wins, knocking off Midway University 44-9 before downing Brewton Parker 33-6 to close the dual season 12-7 and 4-3 in the Mid-South Conference.
“We wrestled better, we didn’t wait to score points,” said coach Javier Maldonado.
Southeastern won all but two matches against Midway, getting bonus points in all eight wins. Tannor Calloway, Dylan Chatterton, and Ben Cruz all recorded pins, and Jake Watters, and Jason Davis scored tech falls.
Davis’ win at 184 against Brewton Parker was the highlight of the day as the sophomore came away with a 5-1 decision over No. 8 Brooks Climmons. The lone point by Climmons was for a second stalling call against Davis in the third period. Davis recorded takedowns at the end of the first and third periods, and got an escape at the start of the second.
“My strategy was to stay in good position,” said Davis. “I’m going to see him in a couple weeks (at regionals) so I didn’t want to open up everything I had, stay reserved, and attack on the moments that were open.”
Silas Root closed the day with a takedown in the second sudden victory tiebreaker to win 4-2 at 285.
Xavier Williamson, Watters, and Chatterton all had technical falls, and Carlos Diaz won by second period fall.
Next up for the Fire is the Newberry Open next Saturday.
