Smith’s Triple-Double Leads Men’s Basketball in Rout at Huntington
Men’s Basketball
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Grant Smith did it all on Saturday with a triple-double in a 105-69 victory for No. 3 Indiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball at Huntington (Ind.). Eight Wildcats scored seven or more points in a game that Indiana Wesleyan led wire-to-wire.
EARLY AND OFTEN
Indiana Wesleyan never trailed on Saturday and built a sizable lead early. Before the midway point of the opening half, IWU already led by 19 points at 32-13. Evan Maxwell scored 15 of his 20 points in the first eight and a half minutes of action. Indiana Wesleyan led 59-34 at halftime and led by as many as 41 points during the second half.
PAINT AND BOARDS
The Wildcats played big down low in the win over the Foresters. IWU outscored HU 48-24 in points in the paint and outrebounded them by a 47-26 advantage. The +21 rebound margin is the best for the Wildcats this season by five rebounds.
10-13-10
Grant Smith made a bit of history for the Wildcats with the first triple-double in program history in at least 15 seasons. He finished the game with 10 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists in only 27 minutes. He was 3-of-3 from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line.
WINNING BIG IN LEAGUE PLAY
The 36-point margin of victory is the largest for Indiana Wesleyan in a Crossroads League game in four years. IWU beat Huntington by 39 points in a 92-53 win on January 6, 2015. Bob Peters scored a game-high 20 points off the bench in that win and Nate Bubash finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
TONAGEL THOUGHTS
“What a complete team effort today. Everybody was focused on making their teammates better. As a result, we played our best game of the year.”
