CLEVELAND, Ohio—The Southeastern University athletic department concluded it’s 2018-19 competition season with a second consecutive Top 20 finish in the NAIA Learfield IMG College Directors’ Cup.
The Fire placed 17th, in the standings that are figured by scoring the top 13 sports in each athletic department with men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and men’s soccer required to be counted.
Southeastern scored 153 points in the fall, 206 in the winter, and added 186.5 in the spring.
A third-place finish by women’s soccer was responsible for 83 points in the fall. In the winter, women’s basketball netted 90 points thanks to its runner-up finish, and wrestling added 55 more by placing 19th. A fifth-place finish by baseball chipped in 78 points, with women’s track and field adding 52.5 by placing 21st, and women’s golf grabbing another 51 by finishing 13th.
Last year, the Fire finished 19th in the standings, which was up from a 45th place finish in 2016-17.
“The Learfield Cup is one of the measuring sticks that we all use to gauge how well our athletic program is doing,” said Director of Athletics Drew Watson. “The fact that we finished at an all-time high this year is a tremendous encouragement that our student-athletes, coaches, and staff are doing the things we need to do to achieve success. It is also a reminder that we have 16 spots to go until we achieve our ultimate goal. We all look forward to that challenge ahead and to having our most successful year yet in 2020. The best is yet to come.”
Oklahoma City University won the Directors’ Cup for the 2018-19 school year, marking its third straight as the NAIA’s top program.
