TAYLOR ROLLS TO PAIR OF WINS AT IWU TOURNAMENT

 

MARION, Ind. – Senior Becca Gerig Tallied 21 kills to lead the Taylor volleyball team to a pair of victories on the first day of the Indiana Wesleyan tournament on Friday.

 

Gerig hammered home ten kills and added 12 digs in the Trojans four-set victory over IU Southeast then added 11 kills and with no hitting errors in a sweep of Indiana Tech.

 

Taylor (5-2) dropped the opening set of the day, falling 29-27 to the Grenadiers from IU Southeast before rattling off three straight sets for the four-set victory. Taylor tallied a 27-25 win in the second set, rolled to a 25-10 win in the third set and closed out the game with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.

 

Sophomore Callie Drage added ten kills for Taylor while Addy Bailey finished with seven kills and added one solo block and ten assisted blocks. Junior Haley Harrell dished out 33 assists for the TU offense while junior Jamie Scherb collected 21 digs on the TU back row.

 

Taylor closed out the opening day of play with a sweep of Indiana Tech (25-22, 25-20, 25-15) to improve to 5-2 on the season.

 

In addition to 11 kills from Gerig, the Trojans got eight kills from senior Rachel Bouma and six each from Bailey and Drage. Harrell added 26 assists to help the Taylor offense to a .206 hitting percentage. Scherb added 11 digs while sophomore Samantha Korns added ten digs.

 

Taylor will face its second ranked opponent of the season on Saturday morning when the Trojans take on 22nd-ranked Lourdes at 10:00 am at Indiana Wesleyan. The Trojans will wrap up the weekend of action with 2:00 pm matchup with IU East.
