RV Taylor Sweeps Third Straight Crossroads League Opponent
Â
UPLAND, Ind. – The Trojans swept their third consecutive Crossroads League opponent on Wednesday when they defeated the visiting Spring Arbor Cougars (11-11, 4-6 CL), 10-2 (6) and 6-0.
Taylor was slow to post runs in game one of the doubleheader, scoring its first in the bottom of the third.
Spring Arbor was the first visiting team all season long to visit Gudakunst and have a lead, but the 2-1 edge did not last long for the Cougars as Kristin Mihalic hit a two-run dinger bringing Maddi Evans home.
In the fifth inning, the Trojans had no problems in bringing in runs. Mihalic would once again hit a two-run blast over the center field fence to bring in Evans.
Rising star, Evans pitched for two innings for Taylor. The freshman had four strikeouts and only gave up two hits in two innings to give her the save. Jessica Doctor picked up the win for TU with four innings of work.
Darby Shaw got the nod to start game two for the Purple and Gold. In her first start of the season, Shaw had four strikeouts and gave up four hits in four innings.
The Trojans wasted no time getting on the board, as Courtney Moriarty hit a two run home-run to deep center that brought Mihalic home in the first inning.
TU would score only one run between the second inning and the fourth inning when Kara Tucker came home on Taylor Wilson’s infield single.
The last runs of the ball game would be scored in the fifth inning with Mihalic, Kanai and Wilson scoring.
Wilson and Moriarty both picked up a stolen base, Mihalic tallied two.
Defense would prevail for the Trojans in game two. In their last seven games, the Trojans have had four shutout victories with three of them ending in the fifth or sixth inning.
Taylor (15-4, 7-0 CL) will host Bethel (5-13, 2-6 CL) on Friday for a Crossroads League doubleheader with first pitch starting at 4:00 pm.
