RV Trojans Score Key League Win Over Huntington
Â
HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Taylor traveled to Huntington on Wednesday evening and came away with a 9-1 victory for its ninth win in 10 tries during the month of April. The win moved the Trojans within a game of first place within the Crossroads League standings.
Both sides posted 10 hits in the nine-inning contest, but Huntington (13-16, 11-4 CL) committed three errors and issued 10 walks on the mound to aid the Taylor attack.
TU capitalized on the extra opportunities, led by a three-hit day at the dish from Andrew Kennedy and two hits from Nathan Targgart and Tanner Watson. Kennedy doubled twice and knocked in three runs, while Targgart doubled once, scored twice and had two RBI. Wyatt Whitman and Sam Wiese were also active, scoring two runs each.
Kennedy also contributed from the bump, working the first 3.2 innings for Taylor, picking up five strikeouts and allowing only one run. Kole Barkhaus tossed the final 5.1 innings to record his first collegiate win. Barkhaus did not allow a run in his longest collegiate outing and scattered four hits, while fanning four Huntington hitters.
Taylor used a four-run outburst in the top of the third to immediately counter the lone run of the night by the Foresters in the bottom of the second. TU controlled the game the rest of the way, adding four more in the seventh and one in the ninth to put the game out of reach.
One-out walks to Tanner Kolbe and Whitman set the stage for the decisive third-inning rally, before three-straight hits from Josh Lane, Targgart and Watson pushed TU to the 4-1 lead.
Kennedy kept the hosts in check into the fourth, before Barkhaus entered and preserved the lead over the duration of the 9-1 victory.
RV Taylor (32-10, 12-5 CL) will return to Winterholter Field to host Goshen (18-21, 9-11 CL) over the weekend for three games. The teams are set to open the series with a single game on Friday at 6:00 pm, before starting a doubleheader on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
