BRUNSWICK, Ga.—The Fire plated eight runs in the last three innings of the first game of its doubleheader against Coastal Georgia to come away with its second conference win of the year, 9-1 then dropped the second, 4-2.
Southeastern recorded their nine runs on 11 hits in the first game, with Sam Holcomb’s RBI single bringing in the first run of the game in the top of the first. Three more runs came across in the fourth on an RBI single by Whittney Purdy and a two-run double by Bailee Moll.
Moll finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, driving in two more in the fifth on a single to right field. Natalie Hughes also drove in a run that inning.
A solo homer by Kristen Schwartz in the sixth capped off the scoring and capped a 3-for-4 effort for Schwartz, who scored three runs.
In the circle, Hannah Bodenhorn was stellar, recording six strikeouts in the first two innings, and finished with nine. The senior gave up just one run on five hits and walked three.
Holcomb drove in both SEU runs in the second game on a double in the first and another in the fifth, but an RBI single in the fifth by Paige Alt gave the Mariners an extra cushion. Holcomb and Moll were both 3-for-3 in the second game, with the rest of the lineup combining for one hit.
The best opportunity for SEU came in the top of the fourth with bases loaded and nobody out. The Mariners recorded a pair of force outs at home on ground balls in the infield and a strikeout to end the inning.
The Fire return to action Thursday in Clermont against Concordia (Mich.) and Minnesota Crookston.
