HOT OFF THE PRESS

Andy Owen’s 11-year run at Evansville Central came to a close with the Bears’ 35-13 loss at East Central in Class 4A play. Owen, who announced at the start of the season he would step down to become the Evansville school corporation’s athletic director, finished with an overall mark of 78-45.

Scott Helms announced his retirement after 23 years at North Daviess where he compiled a 120-125 mark with the Cougars.

Miles McIlwain’s 78-yard kickoff return with 1:03 left lifted Brebeuf Jesuit to a 13-10 win over No. 2 West Lafayette in Class 3A action.

Isaiah Drew’s 20-yard interception return for a touchdown in the closing minute preserved Greenwood’s first regional crown since 1990 in a 34-27 win over Mississinewa in Class 4A play.

Indianapolis Arlington’s 50-15 loss to Indianapolis Lutheran in a Class 1A final marked the end of the line for the Golden Knights’ program. The school is scheduled to close at the end of the school year along with Indianapolis Northwest and Indianapolis Broad Ripple.

Michigan City earned its first regional title with a 21-7 win at Concord in Class 5A play, while Monroe Central and Eastern Greene got their first Class 1A regional crown as well with a 28-21 decision over Southwood and a 42-19 triumph over Fountain Central respectively.

Expecting an overflow crowd, the Indiana High School Athletic Association has moved the Class 4A northern semistate contest between Lowell and Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger from Zollner Stadium to Homestead High School in Fort Wayne.
